The bidding:

South opens and North tells him: (3 - 3 - 2 - 5) and 8 H.
South works out the total: 15 + 3 = 18 DH. 9 DH opposite + 1 for the nine fit in Hearts, so a total of 28:
just what is needed to bid 4. The lead is Queen of Spades.

Lay the King from dummy for East's Ace who replays the 10 and the 3, they bring our Diamonds for the Queen on the right and the King , or a Club.

Those who go down in this contract: - either they have started by drawing trumps (advice 10.5) - or they have had their 7 of Hearts overtrumped by the 8 of Hearts: you will have to show them their folly (advice 10.6).

Before "correcting" the deal, establish very precisely the game plan, following these steps:

1) Choice of base hand: South because it has the longer Trumps suit.

2) Count the losers: - 3 in Spades, inevitable because the opponents must make them…. - 2 in Diamonds, which must be transformed, - none in Hearts (they are all masters), and of course none in Clubs because South doesn't have any.

3) How to dispose of the two losing Diamonds? The pupils must find that they an trump the two Diamonds in dummy ….

Everyone must now find the solution to the problem of this deal: one must trump with dummy's master trump, i.e. the Queen. Ask why and expect the following two answers:

firstly because we know that East has no more Diamonds
secondly because there is no problem with trumps (advice 10.7).

We will offer them the following principle:

When one knows or thinks that one will be overtrumped, one must trump with a master trump.
