the Day
Show that up to now the declarer has been left to play all sorts of contract with his partner without the opponents saying or doing anything. Explain that in Bridge, when the opener and his partner stop at a small contract, it is obviously because they have few points.

It is sometimes going to happen that the opponents realise that they have more DH points than the declarer and his partner: so they will try to play by proposing a higher contract. Now bring in the notion and the definition (if necessary) of an auction; the characteristic of an auction : it always goes upwards.

This elevation in Bridge is twofold:

*** by passing from one level to another; one side says "2X" the other says "3Y" (advice 14.1).
*** by the hierarchy of the suits: give the order: NT, Spades, Hearts, Diamonds, Clubs (advice 14.2).

Take the analogy of a staircase and draw the following diagram on the board, exactly as they will discover it in their Document. Explain that the suits are the steps and NT the limit after which you can only attack at the next level (advice 14.3).

One can never go down: if the opponent is on the "Heart step" and you wish to play in Clubs, you must go to the level above.
