Get your pupils to revise the principles of establishing long suits in No-Trumps with the following example which you will write on the board (or better, lay out on each table).
A K 7 5 3
4 2

Ask how many long suit tricks one can hope to make in this suit and remind them, if they haven't thought of it for themselves, that it depends on the distribution of the suit in the opponents' hands: if it is split 3-3, one can establish two tricks, whereas one can still get one if the suit is split 4 and 2.

Ask them then in practical terms what they must do to establish this (or these) long suit trick. Warmly congratulate those who have thought of the necessity of giving the lead to the opposition.

This is the moment to introduce Trumps. What can one do to establish a suit without giving the lead to the opposition if Trumps exist? One can trump the third round of the suit, of course, and even the fourth round if it is necessary … and possible!

Then insist on the fundamental notion of establishing by trumping: establishing long suit tricks without giving the lead to the opponent!. It's time to play the deal of the day.
