The repeated finesse Contract Contract
: 3NT
The bidding South: "I open"; North: (4 With 27 points in the two hands, South who is the opener reckons that it is pointless bidding 4 NT which is more likely to fail than 3 NT … Lead is the 6 of Clubs (make them find it). At the end (don't forget to congratulate those who make ten tricks! {advice 17.6}), count the certain tricks with them again: 1 in Diamonds,2 in Hearts, 3 in Spades: the residue: 1 in Diamonds at least, and 1 in Spades if the suit has a 3 - 3 split. Make them guess where the "key to happiness" is in his deal; applaud making a finesse in Diamonds. Then explain that they must repeat the finesse when it is successful. Show that if the opponents' Diamonds are split 3 - 2, they will make four tricks in the suit. So, after ducking the lead (advice 17.7), and having taken the return Club in dummy, you must make a first finesse of the King of Diamonds (38). Once it has succeeded, do it again by getting back into dummy with the King of Spades or the Ace of Hearts. As everybody has followed suit twice in Diamonds the last two Diamonds are masters, and East must discard carefully on the last one (advice 17.9) in order not to concede the eleventh trick. In conclusion get them to guess the necessary condition for repeating finesses: being able to get from one hand to the other (nothing more for today).
