  Illustration Deal Glossary Hand-out

The objective is to teach your pupils to over-bid by taking reasonable risks for the moment in part game contracts only. For this you must come back to the notions of scoring: show that it might be good to lose a contract by one trick if the opponents could win theirs, especially if one is not vulnerable.

Get them to notice that the Decision Table from the 1 to the 3 level goes up in steps of 2 points and remind them that it only has an indicative value.

Finally get them to discover that it is always worthwhile out-bidding the opponents if one is only 1 point short of the values of the Table. This is the notion of a small risk.

Ask them then if, in their opinion, it possible to take a greater risk and above all under what conditions. Congratulate the one who discovers that one can do it when not vulnerable, when going two tricks down is still better than letting the opposition win their contract.

Get them to write down the following principle:

- in the situation of a small risk (1 point less than the Decision Table) one over-bids automatically
- in the situation of a medium risk (2 points less than the Decision Table) one only over-bids if one is not vulnerable

Get them to apply all this to the deal of the day.
