Correction of exercises

All your pupils must have succeeded in making South bid 3NT and discovering the lead of 2 of Spades. Go through the play with them of the first trick 2, 3, Queen, King (advice 21.1) and get East to think about the "future" of the suit. Then show that South must go into Diamonds, and underline the fact that he must cash in the Diamonds immediately, before the defence notice that he has four tricks in Clubs. When East takes, go through the defence plan with him: only one certain trick, he must take five, he is four short.

Where to find them? (advice 21.2).

Not in Diamonds or Spades, that's certain. Between Clubs and Hearts it's better to choose Hearts for two reasons:
  1) there is nothing in dummy in Hearts, whereas the Ace of Clubs is there.
  2) East is "richer" in Hearts than in Clubs, and therefore has more chance of cashing in tricks in that suit.
Then show that if East leads back anything other than Hearts, South is likely to make ten tricks (and even eleven if he has the courage to try the finesse of the Jack of Spades).

Comprehension questions

One single revision question today, but very important:

a) What are the successive questions which the defence player must ask himself?
