Establishing by trumping

We have known for a long time already that long suits in Bridge represent an enormous advantage because the master cards which they contain allow us to discard losers from the opposite hand.

But sometimes these cards are not masters from the start of the deal: so we must make them masters, in other words establish them: trumping in is one of the best ways of doing this as this example shows:

K 8 6 4 3

Q 9 5
J 10 7

A 2

The declarer draws trumps and plays the Ace then the 2 for the King and then the 3 which he trumps: the opponents have no more card in this suit where two tricks are established in dummy. It is enough to have kept one master card in another suit to cross over and cash them in …

This also works even if the distribution of the opponents' cards is less convenient:

K 8 6 4 3

Q 9
J 10 7 5

A 2

In the same way, the declarer plays the Ace and then the 2 for the King and trumps the 3. But there is still a Jack to the right. No matter: the declarer goes into dummy and trumps the suit a second time. The last card is a master, but you need a second master in dummy to be able to take advantage of it.
