I make a plan in defence

Playing in defence is just as amusing as playing opposite dummy, even if you have generally less high cards, you must think just as much…

* The contract bid by the opponent determines the contract for the defence: it is the number of tricks which the declarer can lose, plus one.
For example: North bids 2. East-West's contract is six tricks.
* To fulfil their contract, the defence must make a defence plan.
You need to: 1) count the certain tricks of the two hands, suit by suit
    2) decide on the suit or suits where it is possible to find the missing tricks
    3) hope that your partner has the necessary cards in these suits
    4) finally … play accordingly!

All this does not leave you time to get bored, all the more so because, by his lead and the cards he plays during the game, your partner is giving you information which help you to know on what you can count.

A little tip is often useful: you should look for missing tricks in the weak suit in dummy, especially if you are sitting after dummy ….
