You will remember that in No-Trumps the first trick is worth 40 and the others 30; you also know that, if you want to score a game bonus, you must bid 3 No-Trumps because a game is 100 points. The four suits are divided into two groups:
So it is easy to see that the most economical games are in No-Trumps (9 tricks are enough) and in major suits (10 tricks): It is therefore in these suits that the majority of game contracts are played in Bridge. In certain deals it is decided that you are vulnerable: if you fail the penalty is greater but if you win a game the score is higher. The following table shows what you must bid for a game and how much each will score:
Asking for a contract in 6 or 7, i.e. saying you will take 12 or 13 tricks, is called a slam, small (12 tricks) or grand (13 tricks!). If you succeed you win a large bonus which is added to the game score. The following table shows this:
