I make game..!

You will remember that in No-Trumps the first trick is worth 40 and the others 30; you also know that, if you want to score a game bonus, you must bid 3 No-Trumps because a game is 100 points.

The four suits are divided into two groups:

1. The Spades and Hearts are the major suits:
they are valuable suits because each trick is worth 30 points: so you can see that, to have a game bonus in these suits, you must bid at least 4 (4 x 30 = 120).
2. The Diamonds and Clubs are the minor suits:
they are less valuable suits and each trick is only worth 20 points which means the for a game call you must bid 5 or 5 (because 5 x 20 = 100).

So it is easy to see that the most economical games are in No-Trumps (9 tricks are enough) and in major suits (10 tricks): It is therefore in these suits that the majority of game contracts are played in Bridge.

In certain deals it is decided that you are vulnerable: if you fail the penalty is greater but if you win a game the score is higher. The following table shows what you must bid for a game and how much each will score:

Game No. of Tricks Points No. of Points Score
No-Trumps 9 H 25 100
Hearts-Spades 10 DH 27 120
Clubs-Diamonds 11 DH 30 100

Asking for a contract in 6 or 7, i.e. saying you will take 12 or 13 tricks, is called a slam, small (12 tricks) or grand (13 tricks!).

If you succeed you win a large bonus which is added to the game score. The following table shows this:

Slam Not vulnerable Vulnerable
Small 500 750
Grand 1,000 1,500
